Aboriginal Affairs Policy

Land rights, homelessness, education, healthcare, and family supports are all issues that affect Aboriginal peoples in our province, both on- and off-reserve.

The Alberta Liberal Caucus recognizes that issues in these areas must be dealt with in a cohesive and coordinated effort, across government agencies and Ministries, and across levels of government, to ensure that solutions are found.

  • We will advocate for quick, fair, and effective resolution of land claims for Alberta’s First Nations.
  • Take specific measures to improve Aboriginal health care and education, including the establishment of urban-Aboriginal health centres.
  • Raise the profile of Aboriginal health by appointing a Director of Aboriginal Health within Health and Wellness.
  • Heighten cultural awareness among health professionals, and encourage Aboriginal people to enter health professions.
  • Commit to off-reserve housing; and develop a plan, coordinated with existing municipal and provincial homelessness plans, to address the issue of Aboriginal Homelessness
